CLIMATE OF BRUNEI
Brunei has a tropical; hot, humid, rainy climate. It is just north of the equator and has a hot and humid climate the entire year, with high temperatures in the 30s C (90s F) during the day and the steamy 20s C (70s F) at night. The humidity is usually between 70 and 90 percent. The only relief is in air conditioned buildings, which are plentiful, and a few beaches. The days and nights are somewhat cooler in coastal areas with ocean breezes. March and April are the warmest months.
Sunny with a chance of showers characterizes the weather forecast most days. Clear, blue skies are pretty much a daily phenomenon, but when it rains it can really rain. Brunei does not have a distinct rainy season; the wettest months are from October to January and from May to July. The highest rainfall of 400 centimeters (158 inches) a year occurs in the rain forests of Temburong district. The coastal areas receive less rain, about 275 centimeters (108) inches a year.

Rainfall and Monsoons in Brunei
In Borneo, the rainy monsoon season is from October to February, with the rainiest months being December and January, and the dry hot season is from March to September. In comparison, the rainy seasons in Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma, are from May to October and the rainy season in Singapore, and Indonesia are roughly from October to March. These places are influenced by different monsoon wind patterns.
Rains tend to fall in short afternoon downpours during the rainier months, when the countryside is lush and green and beautiful but the jungles are full of leeches and dirt roads in remote areas become impassable. In the drier months, road travel is easier but the countryside is brownish and dusty. Brunei is not hit very often by typhoons because it lies south of the typhoon belt.
Heavy rain in February 2018 caused flooding, landslides, and road closures. In June 2018, Brunei also experienced heavy rain resulting in landsides and flash floods. The Tutong River crested, causing substantial property damage in low-lying areas. Such environmental hazards typically arise during the monsoon seasons from October – February and May – June of each year. Brunei’s beaches are notorious for strong rip tides, which cause drowning deaths nearly every year.
Climate of Borneo
Borneo has an equatorial and tropical rainforest climate characterized by consistently high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and high humidity year-round. The island has no traditional four seasons, but rather experiences wet and dry monsoon periods, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 27̊C and 32̊C (81̊F and 90̊F). Rainfall is very high, averaging roughly 200 to 400 centimeters (6.6 to 13.1 feet) annually across the island. Rain can occur suddenly at any time as short, heavy tropical downpours. Because of Borneo's equatorial position, wind patterns dictate the wet and dry cycles: The Dry Season (April to September) features winds from the southwest bring slightly drier conditions. While rainfall still occurs, this is typically the sunniest and best time for trekking and wildlife spotting. During the Wet Season (October to March) the Northeast Monsoon brings heavier and more frequent rainfall. Coastal areas can experience intense downpours and rough seas, particularly between November and January.
While the entire island shares a tropical rainforest climate, topography heavily influences local weather. Coastal cities like Kuching (Sarawak) and Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) experience more distinct wet and dry shifts, whereas the island's deep interior rainforests remain persistently wet. At higher elevations, such as the upper reaches of Mount Kinabalu, the climate is significantly cooler and can sometimes drop into the single digits (Celsius).
In Malaysian Borneo, Sarawak has a very wet climate, averaging about 250 rainy days a year, with heavy rainfall driven by the Northeast Monsoon (especially from November to January). Inland areas of Sarawak are some of the wettest places in Southeast Asia. Sabah is generally drier than Sarawak. Coastal areas are hot and sunny, while the mountainous highland regions (like Kundasang and Mount Kinabalu) are much cooler, occasionally experiencing near-freezing temperatures at extreme elevations. Its climate is more stable outside of the monsoon peaks.
Why Brunei Rarely Gets Hit by Typhoons
Brunei is rarely affected by typhoons or major tropical cyclones. Although the country frequently experiences thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and occasional squalls, it is out of the region of powerful storms that regularly strike countries farther north in Asia, such as the Philippines, Taiwan, China, and Japan. Brunei’s storms are typically short-lived tropical downpours associated with localized convection or regional monsoon systems rather than large rotating cyclones. Historically, Brunei has recorded virtually no direct landfalls by fully developed typhoons. Instead, the country occasionally experiences indirect effects from regional tropical systems, including periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, rough seas, and localized flooding. These conditions are often associated with monsoon surges, thunderstorms, or weakening tropical disturbances located elsewhere in Southeast Asia. On rare occasions, the outer circulation bands of distant cyclones may influence Brunei’s weather, but the impacts are usually far less severe than those experienced in countries located farther north in the typhoon belt.
One of the main reasons Brunei rarely experiences typhoons is its location near the Equator. Brunei lies at approximately 1.35 degrees north latitude, very close to the equatorial zone. Tropical cyclones require the Coriolis effect—a force created by the Earth’s rotation—to generate and sustain their rotating circulation. Near the Equator, the Coriolis effect is extremely weak and generally insufficient to support the development of organized tropical cyclones. Most typhoons in the western Pacific form farther north, usually between about 5 and 20 degrees north latitude, where rotational forces are much stronger.
