The country's rivers are classified as Himalayan, peninsular, coastal, and inland-drainage basin rivers. Himalayan rivers are snow fed and maintain a high to medium rate of flow throughout the year. The heavy annual average rainfall levels in the Himalayan catchment areas further add to their rates of flow. During the monsoon months of June to September, the catchment areas are prone to flooding. The volume of the rain-fed peninsular rivers also increases. Coastal streams, especially in the west, are short and episodic. Rivers of the inland system, centered in western Rajasthan state, are few and frequently disappear in years of scant rainfall. The Ganges, Indus and Brahmaputra are the main rivers of northern India, To the south of the Gangetic Plain, there are six major rivers. Four of these — the Mahanadi, the Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri — flow into the Bay of Bengal. Several of the rivers have waterfalls and cascades in their upper reaches. The Mahanadi River rises in Madhya Pradesh and is around 900 kilometres (560 miles) long. It is an important source of irrigation water in the state of Orissa. Only two of the peninsula's major rivers flow into the Arabian Sea: the Narmada and the Tapti. The Narmada rises in eastern Madhya Pradesh, flows through Gujarat, and forms a thirteen-mile-wide estuary at the Gulf of Khambhat. The shorter Tapti River runs alongside the Narmada to the south.

Narmada rises in Madhya Pradesh and crosses the state, passing swiftly through a narrow valley between the Vindhya Range and spurs of the Satpura Range. It flows into the Gulf of Khambhat (or Cambay). The shorter Tapti follows a generally parallel course, between eighty kilometers and 160 kilometers to the south of the Narmada, flowing through the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat on its way into the Gulf of Khambhat. *

Rivers of Southern India

To the south of the Gangetic Plain, there are six major rivers. Four of these peninsular rivers — the Mahanadi, the Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri — flow into the Bay of Bengal. All of these rivers originate in the Western Ghats, flow eastwards and deposit silt in fertile deltas. Most of the rivers flow quickly during the rainy season, but are reduced to a fraction of their size, or may even dry up, during the hot season. They have all reached their base level of erosion, resulting in broad, shallow valleys that tend to flood during the rainy season. The Mahanadi rises in Madhya Pradesh and is around 900 kilometers (560 miles) long. It is an important source of irrigation water in the state of Orissa. The Godavari originates north of Mumbai and flows generally southeast for 1,488 kilometers (925 miles) to its fertile delta on the coast of Andhra Pradesh. The Kaveri rises in southern Karnataka and flows irregularly southeastwards for around 764 kilometers (475 miles). Harnessed for irrigation since ancient times, an estimated 95 per cent of the Kâveri's water is used up before the river reaches the Bay of Bengal. The Krishna River rises in the west of the peninsula, not far from Mumbai, and flows east for around 1,285 kilometers (800 miles) before reaching the Bay of Bengal.

Mahanadi, rising in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is an important river in the state of Orissa. In the upper drainage basin of the Mahanadi, which is centered on the Chhattisgarh Plain, periodic droughts contrast with the situation in the delta region where floods may damage the crops in what is known as the rice bowl of Orissa. Hirakud Dam, constructed in the middle reaches of the Mahanadi, has helped in alleviating these adverse effects by creating a reservoir. [Source: Library of Congress *]

Godavari River basin area is second in size only to the Ganges; The source of the Godavari is northeast of Bombay (Mumbai in the local Marathi language) in the state of Maharashtra, and the river follows a southeasterly course for 1,400 kilometers to its mouth on the Andhra Pradesh coast. The Godavari's delta on the east coast is also one of the country's main rice-growing areas. It is known as the "Ganges of the South," but its discharge, despite the large catchment area, is moderate because of the medium levels of annual rainfall, for example, about 700 millimeters at Nasik and 1,000 millimeters at Nizamabad. *

Krishna rises in the Western Ghats and flows east into the Bay of Bengal. It has a poor flow because of low levels of rainfall in its catchment area — 660 millimeters annually at Pune. Despite its low discharge, the Krishna is the third longest river in India. The source of the Kaveri is in the state of Karnataka, and the river flows southeastward. The waters of the river have been a source of irrigation since antiquity; in the early 1990s, an estimated 95 percent of the Kaveri was diverted for agricultural use before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The delta of the Kaveri is so mature that the main river has almost lost its link with the sea, as the Kollidam, the distributary of the Kaveri, bears most of the flow. *

Ganges River

The Ganges is 2,704 kilometers (1,680 miles) long and has a drainage area of 1,016,124 square kilometers (392,328 square miles), It flows from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the south and directly affects the lives of 300 million people. The Ganges Plain which was covered by a shallow sea as recently as 10,000 years ago. A third of India's people (275 million) live in the Ganges Plain, where the population averages over 1,000 people per square mile, one of the highest in the world.

Many Indians believe that the legendary source of the Ganges, and several other important Asian rivers, lies in the sacred Mapam Yumco Lake (known to the Indians as Manasarowar Lake) of western Tibet located approximately 75 kilometers northeast of the India-China-Nepal tripoint. In the northern part of the Ganges River basin, practically all of the tributaries of the Ganges are perennial streams. However, in the southern part, located in the states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, many of the tributaries are not perennial.

Brahmaputra

Brahmaputra River is one of the world's great rivers and as far as anyone knows no one has ever traveled its entire length. Extending for 3,080 kilometers (1,913 miles) through some of the world's most remote and inhospitable terrain, it begins in the Himalayas in western Tibet as a glacier-fed stream and changes its name and twists and turns through China and India before emptying into Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh. By some reckoning the Brahmaputra is the highest river in the world. Brahmaputra means "son of Brahma." Brahma is one of the most prominent Hindu gods. In Hindu cosmology the Brahmaputra is the only male river. The river is regarded as sacred by Buddhists in Tibet but not among the Muslims in Bangladesh.

The Brahmaputra has the greatest volume of water of all the rivers in India because of heavy annual rainfall levels in its catchment basin. At Dibrugarh the annual rainfall averages 2,800 millimeters, and at Shillong it averages 2,430 millimeters. Rising in Tibet, the Brahmaputra flows south into Arunachal Pradesh after breaking through the Great Himalayan Range and dropping rapidly in elevation. It continues to fall through gorges impassable by man in Arunachal Pradesh until finally entering the Assam Valley where it meanders westward on its way to joining the Ganges in Bangladesh. Indus River

Indus River is Pakistan's largest and most important river but parts of it and its tributaries abut or run through India. Flowing southward from the Himalayan-Karakorum range to the Indian Ocean, it is 3,600 kilometers (1,900 miles) long and drains an area of 971,245 square kilometers (375,000 square miles). The broad valleys of the Indus and its tributaries defines Pakistan’s heartland. South Asia's greatest civilization was founded along its banks and much of Pakistan's population relies on food irrigated by its waters.

Rising in the Tibetan Himalayas of China, the Indus River flows through Indian-controlled Jammu and Kashmir before entering Pakistan. The Indus has five principal tributaries of Himalayan origin that are important to India: the Sutlej, the Beas, the Ravi, the Chenab and the Jhelum. These rivers drain part of the Indian state of Punjab, whose name is derived from 'panch ab', meaning 'five waters' or 'five rivers'. The name Indus comes from the Sanskrit word sindhu, meaning ocean, from which also come the words Sindh, Hindu, and India. The Indus gave India its name. In the A.D. first century, Roman historian Pliny used the name. In Pakistan the Indus sometimes called the Lion River.

Lakes of India

There is a variety of lakes in India; salt water and fresh natural ones as well as man-made ones. Water levels in most lakes flutcuate as a result of rainfall amounts and human use. Chilka Lake, the largest brackish water lake in Asia, is also India's largest lake. Spanning 425 square miles (1,100 square kilometers), the lagoon's bird and fish habitats, as well as its rich algae content, are under threat from silt, sedimentation and commercial interests. Wular Lake, located in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir, is India's largest freshwater lake, spanning 78 square miles (202 square kilometers). It contains large amounts of floating vegetation and is an important source of fish and irrigation water.

Dal Lake in Kashmir is Srinagar's most famous landmark. Relatively shallow, it is greenish brown in color and is choked with weeds, lily pads, lotuses and other aquatic plants. Nestled at the foothills of Mount Shridhara, it is still a sight to behold. It is dotted with elaborate houseboats that are decorated with intricate wood carvings, and colorful shikaras (narrow wooden boats that resemble the gondolas in Venice). The lake used to have a reputation for being a pleasant place for a swim. Houseboats moored away from the shore had platforms and swimmers gushed about the bliss they felt relaxing in the clear water surrounded by the mountains of the Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain ranges.

India has a number of artificial lakes. The state of Tamil Nadu has an extensive system of shallow irrigation reservoirs, known as 'tanks', which has been maintained since the A.D. 8th century. Harnessing the waters of the major rivers that flow from the Himalayas is an issue of great concern in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. Issues of flood control, drought prevention, hydroelectric power generation, job creation, and environmental quality — but also traditional lifestyles and cultural continuities — are at stake as these countries grapple with the political realities, both domestic and international, of altering the flow of the Ganges and Brahmaputra. Although India, Nepal, and Bangladesh seek to alleviate problems through cooperation over Himalayan rivers, irrigation projects altering the flow of Punjab-area rivers are likely to continue to be an irritant between India and Pakistan — countries between which cooperation is less likely to occur — in the second half of the 1990s. In India dams have been built to control flooding, improve navigation, generate electricity and provide water from irrigation and other uses. India has built more than 3,000 dams since independence in 1947. These dams brought electricity and irrigated crops land to millions but also driven up to 56 million people from their homes and swamped forests and wildlife hapitats. Wetlands of India

Wetlands is India include river floodplains, freshwater lakes, marshes, mangrove forests, estuaries, coastal lagoons, reservoirs, and salt marshes. India has more than 750,000 wetlands covering an estimated 15 million hectares (37 million acres), or about 4.5 percent of its land area. These ecosystems provide habitat for wildlife, help regulate floods, recharge groundwater, improve water quality, and support fisheries and agriculture. One of India's most significant wetland regions is the Sundarbans, a vast mangrove forest in the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna Delta along the Bay of Bengal. Shared by India and Bangladesh, the Sundarbans contain the world's largest continuous mangrove ecosystem, covering approximately 10,000 square kilometers (3,860 square miles). The region supports a rich diversity of wildlife, including the endangered Bengal tiger, estuarine crocodiles, fishing cats, and hundreds of bird species. The mangrove forests also serve as a natural barrier against cyclones, storm surges, and coastal erosion.

In western India, the Great Rann of Kachchh and Little Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat form one of the world's largest seasonal salt marsh systems. Covering more than 30,000 square kilometers (11,600 square miles), these wetlands are inundated during the monsoon season and become vast salt flats during the dry season. The region contains extensive mangrove forests along the Gulf of Kachchh and provides habitat for flamingos, pelicans, wild asses, and numerous migratory birds.

India is a member of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an international treaty for wetland conservation. The country has more than 80 Ramsar Sites, covering over 1.3 million hectares (3.2 million acres). Among the most important are Chilika Lake in Odisha, the largest brackish-water lagoon in Asia, and Loktak Lake in Manipur, the largest freshwater lake in northeastern India. Chilika Lake supports more than 200 species of fish and attracts hundreds of thousands of migratory birds each winter. Loktak Lake is known for its floating islands, called phumdis, and contains the world's only floating national park.

Other major wetland sites include Harike Wetland and Ropar Wetland in Punjab, both important habitats for migratory waterfowl; Wular Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, one of the largest freshwater lakes in South Asia; and Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan, India's largest inland salt lake. Keoladeo National Park in Rajasthan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a managed wetland famous for its birdlife and has recorded more than 370 bird species.

India's wetlands support thousands of plant and animal species, including many that are threatened or endangered. They provide critical stopover points for migratory birds traveling along the Central Asian Flyway, one of the world's major bird migration routes. However, many wetlands face pressures from urban expansion, pollution, agricultural runoff, invasive species, excessive water extraction, and sedimentation. Conservation programs and Ramsar designation have helped improve protection for many of these ecosystems, although wetland loss remains a significant environmental challenge in several parts of the country.
