CLIMATE OF KYRGYZSTAN
The climate of Kyrgyzstan varies a great deal depending on location, ranging from dry continental to polar in high the Tien Shan Mountains to subtropical in the southwest (Fergana Valley) to temperate in northern foothill zone. There are sharp local variations between mountain valleys and flatlands. Precipitation also varies greatly from western mountains (high) to north-central region (low).
There are great extremes of hot and cold on a daily basis and yearly basis. It can be as cold as Siberia in the winter and quite hot in the summer. In the mountains daytime and nighttime differences of 50 degrees C (90 degrees F) have been recorded. The temperature extremes found in Central Asia have earned it the nickname, “the land of the fan and the fur.” Kyrgyzstan is also very windy. In the highlands winds of 50 mph are not uncommon. Fog is also common.
Kyrgyzstan's climate is influenced chiefly by the mountains, Its position near the middle of the Eurasian landmass, and the absence of any body of water large enough to influence weather patterns. Those factors create a distinctly continental climate that has significant local variations, including winter temperatures averaging –30°C (-22°F) in the mountain valleys and summer temperatures averaging 27°C (81°F) in the Fergana Valley. The western mountains receive as much as 200 centimeters (78.7 inches) of precipitation per year, but the west bank of Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan’s largest lake, receives only 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) per year.
Although the mountains tend to collect clouds and block sunlight (reducing some narrow valleys at certain times of year to no more than three or four hours of sunlight per day), the country is generally sunny, receiving as much as 2,900 hours of sunlight per year in some areas. The same conditions also affect temperatures, which can vary significantly from place to place.

Seasons in Kyrgyzstan
The winter are harsh in the mountains but tolerable in Bishkek and the Lake Issyk-Kul area. Siberian winds can send the temperature plummeting to -30°C (-25° F) in the high elevations. Snow covers much of country. In Bishkek, the high temperatures on winter days are below freezing about a fourth of the time. Snows falls in Bishkek from mid November through March and tends to fall in squalls and flurries rather than storms although severe blizzards do occur from time to time. The snow on the ground tends to be icy and crusty. In the mountains snow can accumulate to great depths.
In January the warmest average temperature (–4°C or 25°F) occurs around the southern city of Osh and around Issyk-Kul, which does not freeze in winter. Indeed, its name means "hot lake" in Kyrgyz. The coldest temperatures are in mountain valleys. There, readings can fall to –30°C (–22°F) or lower; the record is –53.6°C (–64.5°F).
The summers are hot and characterized by great extremes during the night and day. Temperatures often rises above 32° C (90 ° F) or even 37 ° C (100 ° F) during the afternoon and then sometimes drop into the single digits C (40sF) at night. The average temperature for July similarly varies from 27°C (81°F) in the Fergana Valley, where the record high is 44°C (111°F), to a low of –10°C (14°F) on the highest mountain peaks.
Spring and autumn are pleasant and the best time to visit. Spring can be rainy, muddy and windy. Temperatures and weather conditions are also greatly influenced by elevations. The mountains and highlands obviously are colder than the lowlands.
Rainfall in Kyrgyzstan
The weather in Kyrgyzstan is wetter than in the other Central Asian countries, but it is still quite dry in much of the country. Precipitation varies from 200 centimeters (78.7 inches) per year in the mountains above the Fergana Valley to less than 10 centimeters (3.9 inches) per year on the west bank of Issyk-Kul. Bishkek enjoys 247 days of sunny weather a year. It receives only about 53 centimeters (20.9 inches) of precipitation annually (compared to more than 100 centimeters (39.4 inches) per year in the United States).
Rainfall amounts are related to locations on the mountains. Wind blow primarily from west to east and areas along the windward sides of the mountains receive a fair amount of rain while areas along the leeward sides of the mountains receive little rain. Most rains fall in the spring and early summer. The rains in May and June are crucial for agriculture. Often times the rain is spotty. Huge thunder heads blow in, dropping heavy rains in one place and completely bypassing another.
Precipitation include snow and rainfall and falls greater amounts in the western mountains and to a lesser extent in the flatter, lower regions of north-central Kyrgyzstan.Average precipitation levels range from 10 to 50 centimeters (4 to 20 inches) in the valleys and 18 to 100 centimeters (7 to 40 inches) in the mountains. Extremes vary from less than 10 centimeters (4 inches) per year on the west bank of Issyk-Kul to 200 centimeters (79 inches) per year in the mountains above the Fergana Valley. Most of the lowland areas in the Ferghana, Chu and Talas valleys are arid, receiving less than 18 centimeters (seven inches) of rainfall per year. Regional Climate Variations in Kyrgyzstan
Temperatures, seasons and precipitation vary with altitude and geography. There are several distinct climatic zones but in general, lowland valleys experience hot summers and relatively mild winters, while the highest mountain regions remain cold throughout the year. In Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital and largest city Bishkek, in the extreme part of the country, the average annual precipitation is 42.9 centimeters (16.9 inches). The warmest parts of Kyrgyzstan are the valley and foothill regions below about 1,200 meters (3,937 feet), particularly the Chuy Valley around Bishkek and the Fergana Valley near Osh. Summers in these areas are hot and dry, with average temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F) and occasionally rising above 40°C (104°F) in the south. Winters are shorter and less severe than in the mountains, with relatively little snowfall because precipitation is limited. The warmest January average is -4°C (25°F), near the southern city of Osh and around Lake Issyk-Kul, which never freezes. In July, the average temperature is around 27°C (81°F) in the Fergana Valley,
At elevations between about 1,200 and 2,200 meters (3,937 to 7,218 feet), the climate becomes more moderate. Summers are pleasantly warm, making these regions well suited for agriculture and providing relief from the intense heat of the valleys. Winters are colder and bring dependable snowfall. One of the most distinctive areas within this zone is Lake Issyk-Kul. Located at an elevation of about 1,607 meters (5,272 feet), the lake is so deep and slightly saline that it never freezes. Its waters act as a natural thermal reservoir, moderating temperatures in surrounding areas by reducing winter cold and summer heat. As a result, the Issyk-Kul Basin enjoys a milder climate than other regions at similar elevations.
The alpine belt, which extends from roughly 2,200 to 3,500 meters (7,218 to 11,483 feet), covers many of the higher ridges and valleys of the Tien Shan and Pamir-Alai mountain systems. Here, winters are long and severe, often lasting from November through March. Heavy snowfall is common, and many high mountain passes become inaccessible. Summers are brief and cool, with average July temperatures ranging from about 11°C to 16°C (52°F to 61°F). Frost can occur even during the warmest months of the year.
Above 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) lies the nival zone, a realm of permanent cold dominated by glaciers, snowfields, and permafrost. Conditions resemble those of polar regions despite Kyrgyzstan’s relatively southern latitude. Even during July, average temperatures in many areas rise only to between 4°C and 7°C (39°F and 45°F). Many of the country's highest peaks remain covered with snow and ice throughout the year.
Precipitation patterns are also strongly influenced by the mountains. Moist air masses arriving from the west are forced upward by mountain slopes, causing rainfall and snowfall on windward slopes. Some western and southwestern mountain areas receive as much as 2,000 millimeters (200 centimeters, 78.7 inches) of precipitation annually, especially in the mountains overlooking the Fergana Valley. In contrast, regions lying in mountain rain shadows receive much less moisture. The western shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, for example, receive less than 100 millimeters (10 centimeters, 3.9 inches) of precipitation per year, making them among the driest parts of the country.
