GEOGRAPHY OF CENTRAL ASIA
Central Asia is mostly an arid landlocked, with steppes in the north and harsh deserts in the south. Majestic mountains — in particular the Tien Sien and the Pamirs — dominate the east and southeast. There are high plateaus around the mountains. The rivers that thread through the region are fed by melting snow and glaciers and carve deep valleys and ravines. Many important agricultural areas are irrigated, sometimes using the ancient qanat system of underground canals. Important crops include cotton, melons, rices and vegetables. Around the mountains and in the steppes people herd sheep, goats and horses. Scattered around the region are large deposits of oil, natural gas, gold, aluminum and other valuable minerals. The largest oil and natural gas deposits are in and around the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.
Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan together occupy about 7.5 million square kilometers (2,895,766 square miles), an area around half the size of the continental United States or two thirds the size of the European Union. Central Asia is defined geographically by the Caspian Sea to the west, the northern part of the Kazakhstan steppe to the north, the Altay Mountains and Taklamakan Desert of China to the east and the Pamirs and southern Turkmenistan deserts in the south. Central Asia occupies the center of the Eurasian continent and consists of a large region of steppes, deserts, mountains, valleys, and oases. It is bordered by Russia to the north, China to the east, Afghanistan and Iran to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the west. The region covers approximately 1,542,200 square miles (3,994,000 square kilometers) of land. It is about half the size of the continental United States (excluding Alaska) and about twice the size of Mexico. The Caspian Sea forms Central Asia's western boundary and has a coastline of approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) along the region. Despite this shoreline, Central Asia is landlocked and has no direct access to the world's oceans. As a result, the countries of the region depend on neighboring states for access to major seaports and international maritime trade routes.
Many rivers in Central Asia carry large amounts of suspended sediment and often appear brown or muddy even far from their sources. Much of this sediment consists of fine yellowish-gray marl and loess that remain suspended in the water for long periods. Geologists have attributed these deposits to the weathering of porphyry rock in the surrounding mountains. Wind carried the resulting fine dust across the region, where it gradually accumulated and helped form the extensive loess deposits of the Central Asian plateau.
Turkestan
Central Asia embraces Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, five former Soviet republics. Sometimes western China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, south-central Russia and/or Mongolia are included depending on whether the countries are grouped together by language family, geography, horseman-nomadic traditions or sharing the “stan” suffix.” The core five Central Asian nation, plus western China (Xinjiang) are sometimes called Turkestan (Turkistan) because many of the people that live there speak Turkic languages. The term “Inner Asia” is also used. It includes Tibet and Manchuria, with a particular focus on people with horseman-nomadic traditions.
Central Asia has traditionally provided a bridge between Asia and Europe, which meet on the Eurasia steppe. The region has always regarded as exotic because its association with he Silk Road, the Great Game, and cultures and people that Westerners have known little about. The regions inaccessibility during the Soviet area only augmented this reputation.
Marisa Larson wrote in in National Geographic: “All of Central Asia, from Siberia in the north to Afghanistan in the south, from the Gobi desert in the east to the Caspian Sea in the west, used to be known as Turkistan. The name was meant to indicate the areas inhabited by Turkic people, yet this region also contained other ethnic groups such as the Tajik, and didn’t encompass some Turkic people of the former Ottoman Empire and the Volga River areas. The whole of Turkistan was ruled by various Turkic rulers until the arrival of Mongol Genghis Khan in 1220. Eventually the region was divided into East and West Turkistan with China controlling all of East Turkistan. Much of West Turkistan came under Russian rule starting in 1876. Until the Russian Revolution of 1917 the Russian government didn’t involve itself with the traditional lives of these people. However, after the revolution, European Russians began immigrating to the area. Beginning in 1924, Soviet leaders divided West Turkistan into states with artificial borders, often splitting ethnic groups. Within the newly created states, ethnic groups competed for dominance. Former Soviet Central Asian Countries
Central Asia is defined geographically by the Caspian Sea to the west, the northern part of the Kazakhstan steppe to the north, the Altay Mountains and Taklamakan Desert of China to the east and the Pamirs and southern Turkmenistan deserts in the south. The dying Aral Sea lies between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
The total area of the five former Soviet Central Asian republics — Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan — is approximately 3.9 million square kilometers, slightly more than 40 percent of the area of the United States and less than one-quarter of the area of Russia. The region stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east, and from central Siberia in the north to Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan in the south. The area of the republics varies greatly: Kazakhstan, by far the largest, occupies about 2.7 million square kilometers, more than two-thirds of the region. The smallest republic, Kyrgyzstan, occupies only 198,500 square kilometers. The region contains enormous natural and agricultural resources. All five republics have favorable agricultural regions and some combination of attractive minerals and fuels. Their industrial bases include trained workers, and their populations have relatively high educational levels and literacy rates. Unfortunately, the moribund, highly inefficient system through which the Soviet Union exploited those resources has proved very difficult to disassemble. The Central Asians have suffered all the typical transitional ills of former communist states moving toward a market economy: erratic supply of critical industrial inputs, increased unemployment, sharply increased inflation, declining capacity utilization and output by industry, and acute shortages of goods. In response, all five governments have pledged meaningful reform, but obstacles such as unworkable government structure, ethnic rivalries, and a variety of social tensions have made all five move cautiously.*
Eurasian Steppe
The Eurasian Steppe is a vast temperate grassland stretching approximately 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) east to west across Eurasia, from Hungary in Central Europe to Manchuria in northeastern China. About 800 kilometers (500 miles) at its widest point from north to south and forming the northern counterpart to the European Plain, it has long served as a major corridor for migration, trade, and the rise of powerful nomadic civilizations such as the Mongols. The steppe extends across parts of Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. Characterized by its immense open spaces, the region is predominantly flat, with few trees and gently rolling grasslands. In the west, it merges into the broader lowlands of the European Plain. The climate is generally semi-arid, with hot summers, long and intensely cold winters, and relatively low levels of annual precipitation.
The Eurasian Steppe played a crucial role in world history. Many scholars believe it was one of the first regions where horses were domesticated, a development that transformed transportation, warfare, and pastoral life. Long before the emergence of the Silk Road, the steppe served as a transcontinental trade route, facilitating the exchange of goods, technologies, and ideas between Europe and Asia. Silk, horses, metals, and other valuable commodities moved across these grasslands for centuries.
The steppe was the homeland of numerous nomadic peoples who relied on horseback mobility. Among the most notable were the Scythians, who dominated much of the western steppe during antiquity, and the Mongols, who under the leadership of Genghis Khan created the largest contiguous land empire in history. The region's geography favored highly mobile societies whose influence shaped the political and cultural development of Eurasia for millennia.
Steppe
A steppe is a dry, semi-arid ecoregion characterized by vast grassland plains without closed forests. They occur in temperate climates, experiencing hot summers and cold, bitter winters. They receive limited rainfall (typically 10 to 20 inches per year), making them too dry for forests but not dry enough to be deserts. The famous Eurasian Steppe of Central Asia comprises flat or gently rolling grassland, averaging 500 miles in width. It is mostly treeless except for areas along riverbanks. It stretches from Mongolia and the Great Wall of China in the east to Hungary and the Danube River in the west. It is bounded by the taiga forest of Russia to the north and by desert and mountains to the south. It is located at about same latitude as the American plains and embraces a dozen countries, including Russia, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrzgzstan and several other former Soviet Republics.
Describing the steppes, Polish Nobel laureate Henry Sienkiewicz wrote in "With Fire and Sword", "The steppes are wholly desolate and unpeopled yet filled living menace. Silent and still yet seething with hidden violence, peaceful in their immensity yet infinitely dangerous, these boundless spaces were a masterless, untamed country created foe ruthless men who acknowledge no one as their overlord."
The poor yellow steppe soil is much less fertile than rich black earth found in southern Russia and Ukraine. When the topsoil is stripped of vegetation it becomes dusty and is easily blown away in the wind.
Steppe Plants and Grasses
Steppes are covered mostly by sparse grass or grasses and shrubs such as saxual. Trees are often stunted. Large trunks, branches and leaves require a lot of water to maintain. When the steppes meet the foot foothills, you can find wild poppies, even wild opium poppies.
Plant life can be diverse. Many varieties of grain and grass grow in the steppes in the north. These include feather grass, wormwood and tipachak—an oatlike grass that grows in steppes and deserts. The summer pasturage are here. Wormwood and grasses dominate the semidesert regions.
Most of Kazakhstan is desert covered by drought resistant bushes, small brush and different grasses called saltworts or salt grass (solyanka). In the sandy deserts are sand wormwood, alhagi, sage, acacias and haloxyon (saksaul). In thr flat lands are tugainye woods. Wormwood and grasses predominate in semidesert regions. In the sandy deserts are sand wormwood, sage, acacias, and haloxyon (saksaul ). In the flatland are tugainye woods, and around the lakes reeds are found in abundance.
Poppies and tulips cover the foothills of the mountains. Higher up in the mountains are bushes and mixed woods. Higher up still are coniferous forests. In the forests around glacial streams and in alpine and subalpine meadows is where a great variety of animals have traditionally been found. Forests contain cedar, larch, spruce, and juniper.
Steppe Grasses
The grass family is one of the largest in the plant kingdom, embracing some 10,000 different species worldwide. Contrary to what you might think, grasses are fairly complex plants. What you see are only their leaves.
Grass flowers are often not recognizable as such. Because grasses rely on the breeze to distribute pollen (there is a usually lots of wind on the steppe) and they don’t need colorful flowers to attract pollinators such as birds and bees. Grass flowers have scales instead of pedals and grow in clusters on special tall stems that lift them high enough to be carried by the wind.
Grasses need lots of sunlight. They do not grow well in forests or other shady areas. Tall feather grass grows well in the well-watered parts of the steppe. Shorter grass grows better in the dry steppe where there is less rainfall. Chiy, a grass with cane-like reeds, is used by nomads to make decorative screens in the yurts
Grasses can tolerate lack of rain, intense sunlight, strong winds, shredding from lawnmowers, the cleats of Athletes and the hooves of grazing animals. They can survive fires: only their leaves burn; the root stocks are rarely damaged.
The ability of grass to endure such harsh conditions lies in the structures of its leaves, The leaves of other plants spring from buds and have a developed a network of veins that carry sap and expand into the leaf. If a leaf is damaged a plant can seal its veins with sap but do little else. Grass leaves on the other hand don't have a network of veins, rather they have unbranched veins that grow straight, and can tolerate being cut, broken or damaged, and keep growing.
Mountains of Central Asia
Three of the world’s great mountain ranges — the Tian Shan, Pamirs and to a lesser degree the Altai — dominate the eastern mountainous part of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, southeast Kazakhstan, China, and western Mongolia. These ranges in turn are connected with the Himalayas, the Hindu Kush and Karakoram Mountains that extend across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, India and Bhutan
The Pamirs is a 800-kilometer-long (500-mile-long) range made up of very high rounded mountains between 5,000 and 7,000 meters (16,400 and 23,000 feet) high that stretch across eastern Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan into western China. Known as “The Roof of the World,” "The Foot of the Gods," and "Midpoint between Heaven and Earth," they occupy one of the least explored and most sparsely populated regions of the world. The Pamirs offer some of the most spectacular Alpine scenery in the world but is difficult to get to.
The Pamirs are among the highest mountains in the world, with an extraordinary mean elevation of 3,965 meters (13,000 feet). Centered in southern Tajikistan, they branch off in different directions, connecting with other great mountain ranges such as the Tian Shan in neighboring Kyrgyzstan and China. The Tian Shan (Tien Shan) is a formidable mountain range in Central Asia and one of the great mountain ranges of the world. Extending in a northeast-southwest direction along the border between China and Central Asia from the Altai area — where Mongolia, Russia and China all come together — to the Pamir Range in the Tajikstan and southwest China. The highest point is 7439-meter (24,406-foot) -high Pobeda Peak in Kyrgyzstan. The most impressive mountain — and highest point of Kazakhstan — is Khan-Tengri peak (6995 meters, 22,950 feet) in on the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border.

The Altay Region (including part of East Kazakhstan) is a mountainous area in central Asia where Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan and China all come together. Situated between the Gobi Desert and the Siberian Plain, it is regarded as the homeland of the of the Mongolians, Turks, Koreans, Hungarians and Parzyrks (famous well-preserved 4,000-year-old Parzyrk mummies have been found here). Ural-Altaic languages are named after the region. Ancient petroglyphs found in the area are believed to have been made the ancestors of the Altay.

Avalanches Plague Mountainous Central Asia
Heavy snowfall and avalanches have frequently disrupted transportation and caused fatalities in Central Asia's mountainous regions. During one severe winter weather event, Kyrgyzstan declared a state of emergency in several parts of the country after three days of heavy snow. At least four people were killed in an avalanche near the southern town of Kara-Kulja, and major transportation routes were affected, including the highway linking the capital, Bishkek, with southern Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan's Ecology and Emergency Situations Ministry also reported that a magnitude 5 earthquake struck the southern Alai region during the same period, adding to the challenges faced by emergency responders.
In neighboring Uzbekistan, an avalanche near the strategic Kamchik Pass blocked the main road connecting much of the country with the densely populated Ferghana Valley. The pass is a critical transportation corridor linking eastern and western parts of Uzbekistan.
Tajikistan was also affected by severe avalanche activity. More than 100 avalanches were reported in the Pamir Mountains within a 24-hour period, killing at least one person and blocking all roads leading to the southeastern city of Khorog. Officials described some of the avalanches as exceptionally large, depositing more than 1 meter (3.3 feet) of snow on roads and buildings in eastern Tajikistan.
Tajik authorities also reported that earthquakes during the same month damaged more than 480 homes and completely destroyed 95 houses in the Baljuvan district, east of the capital, Dushanbe. The events highlighted the vulnerability of Central Asia's mountainous regions to both severe winter weather and seismic activity.
Climate and Weather of Central Asia
Central Asia contains five major geographical and climatic zones: the northern steppe and forest-steppe, the western desert region, the southern and southeastern mountain region, the fertile valleys and oases between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, and a belt of moderately elevated valleys located between the mountains and the central plains. The northern steppe and forest-steppe cover nearly half of the region and are found primarily in Kazakhstan. The northern steppe lies at roughly the same latitude as Montana, Minnesota, and North Dakota in the United States and has a strongly continental climate. Winters are long, cold, and snowy, while summers are hot, dry, and sunny. Average January temperatures range from -28°C to -14°C (-18°F to 7°F), while July temperatures range from 5°C to 18°C (41°F to 65°F). Spring and autumn are generally shorter and milder than the winter and summer seasons.
The desert zone occupies southwestern Central Asia, including much of Turkmenistan and western Uzbekistan. This region receives little rainfall throughout the year and experiences large temperature extremes. In the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts, average January temperatures range from -18°C to 6°C (-1°F to 43°F), while July temperatures range from 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F). Winter temperatures can occasionally fall to between -28°C and -33°C (-18°F and -27°F), while summer temperatures may rise to between 45°C and 50°C (113°F and 122°F). Annual rainfall generally ranges from 100 to 300 millimeters (4 to 12 inches).
The major mountain systems of Central Asia extend from southeastern Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan through Tajikistan and into southern Uzbekistan. Many peaks exceed 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) in elevation and are covered by glaciers, permanent snowfields, and areas of permafrost. Climatic conditions become increasingly severe at elevations above 3,000 meters (9,840 feet), where average January temperatures range from -28°C to -14°C (-18°F to 7°F) and July temperatures from 5°C to 18°C (41°F to 65°F).
The fertile valleys and oases between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers include much of Uzbekistan, northern Tajikistan, and southwestern Kyrgyzstan. The Ferghana Valley, shared by Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, is one of the most densely populated areas in Central Asia. January temperatures generally range from -14°C to 7°C (7°F to 45°F), while average July temperatures range from 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F). In the southern Ferghana Valley, subtropical conditions occur in some areas, with January temperatures ranging from 5°C to 18°C (41°F to 65°F) and July temperatures from 26°C to 33°C (78°F to 92°F). Summer temperatures occasionally exceed 40°C (104°F). Annual rainfall ranges from 180 to 800 millimeters (7 to 32 inches), and agriculture depends heavily on irrigation supplied by rivers originating in the Tian Shan and Pamir mountains.
A series of moderately elevated valleys extends across parts of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and southern Turkmenistan. These valleys contain abundant water resources supplied by mountain streams and rivers and support some of the region’s most favorable living conditions. The climate is relatively mild and dry compared with the surrounding deserts and high mountains. Average January temperatures range from -14°C to 7°C (7°F to 45°F), while July temperatures generally range from 26°C to 29°C (78°F to 84°F). Moderate rainfall and reliable water supplies have made these valleys important agricultural and population centers.
